Krin's family and neighbors are hungry. The local fish have disappeared and without them her village won't survive the winter. Even worse, the local religious leadership is one maven short of a full troika, preventing a magical solution to the problem.

When a trio of kitten fairies claims teenaged Krin, her reputation for imaginative story embellishment nearly prevents the villagers from accepting her as their newest maven. Even the head of the troika considers her a liability and sends her out, unprepared, for the traditional rite of passage on The Broken Rocks.

But things have changed on The Broken Rocks. When Krin returns, no one believes her tale of the merfolk she encounters there, the reason for the lack of fish, and the burgeoning threat to the entire village.

Can she convince them that she is telling the truth--this time?
