Imagine with me the hushed darkness. Not just silence but a collective held breath. Right now there is nothing at all, but that is about to change. But how can it? What else can there be, but what has always been?
And yet, watch. Listen. Taste. Feel. Smell.
Out of darkness, light.
Out of silence, God’s voice.
Out of sterility, a sweet scent, a warm breath. A sensation, a whisper where there had been nothing.
Out of nothing, everything.
And it was good.
Oh, the magnitude of creation! Earth from heaven, water from land, dark from light. And from there, plants and trees, sun, moon, and stars, water creatures, winged creatures, land creatures.
And it was good.
Yet something was missing, so God created mankind in his own image. “Be responsible,” God said. For the fish, for the birds, for the cattle … “and yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of the Earth.” (Genesis 1:28 MSG). “Be fruitful and multiply,” God said. “Populate the earth. I make you trustees of My estate, so care for creation…” (Genesis 1:28 VOICE)
Trustees. Caregivers. Guardians. Keepers. Champions.
A creature who can communicate with God Most High has crowned a perfect creation. Male and female together. Symbiotic. Two dissimilar but dependent organisms joined together in a mutually beneficial relationship. Male and female. Human and God. Human and creation.
Behold the potential for perfection.
God saw it, and it was very good.
Perhaps even excellent.
