Thinking of going on a diet? Carrie Carlson walks you through some no-nonsense steps in figuring out which eating plan is best for you and both what to expect and what not to expect from it! This easy-to-read guide is refreshingly free of bias.
Carlson is a follower of Trim Healthy Mama, same as I am. However, she’s more ready to admit than I am that it may not be the best plan for everyone! She describes the ways THM lines up with her lifestyle such as wanting real food, not pills or packaged food/drinks, wanting to be able to eat out, etc. She also wanted a plan where she was taught to make wise choices on her own. She says, “People who refuse to think cannot be free because, like small children, they will destroy themselves by making bad or even flat-out dangerous decisions.”
She also offers relief from fixation on numbers, reminding the reader that pounds, BMI, and calories are not actually the problem. She says, “…the vast majority of overweight and obese people are eating the standard American, high-sugar, highly processed diet. It is the sugar and processed food that puts you at risk for diseases, not a person’s weight and BMI.”
Interesting! It makes total sense, yet we’re bombarded with the message that we need to lose weight to be healthy, when, in fact, we need to get to the source of the weight. We need to cut the junk to be healthy and, odds are, we’ll also lose the weight that is an indicator of our poor diet.
If you’d like to take a step back from all the hype of one diet or another and look at weight loss from a more balanced perspective, give Carrie Carlson’s book a read. You can find Formerly Fluffy: Been-There-Done-That Insights on Losing Weight Without Losing Your Mind on Amazon.
